Our great great grandparents, Matthew O'Malley and Sarah Fadden were married in 12th October 1845.
The best man was Michael Staunton and the Bridesmaid was Ellen Dillon. Matthew O'Malley's name is spelt in various records as O'Meally and Mally. Locally, the family were probably known as Malia or Melia which reflects the Irish language
pronounciation more accurately. His first name has been listed as Martin in records but his gravestone records his name as Matthew as do family stories.
Family lore is that Matthew & Sarah moved to Ballintubber to the family home in Skehanagh before the famine. It is possible the house already existed.
It is believed that Matthew came originally from the nearby village of Carnacon.
A story which survived in the records of their daughter Annie states that Mathew's grandmother or great grandmother was a Spanish lady called Rodriguez who wore a Spanish mantilla.
Matthew & Sarah raised the following children: Michael, William, Patrick, John, Mathew, Annie, Bridget, Margaret and Thomas.
Only Michael, Margaret and Thomas remained in Ireland. Michael inherited the family home and farm in Ballintubber, got married and is our great grandfather.
Margaret became a nun in the Order of Poor Clares and eventually went to work and live in the US. We believe she belonged to a Poor Clare community in Spokane, Washington, USA.
Thomas became a priest and subsequently a canon.
